What is Parota wood?
Parota is the Mexican name for the Guanacaste tree (Enterolobium cyclocarpum), also called the elephant ear tree. In Costa Rica we call it Guanacaste. It is our national tree. Same tree, same wood: if you searched for guanacaste wood, you're in the right place.
The wood runs from golden to walnut brown, often with a pale sapwood edge and wide, open grain. It is light for its size, so a 10-foot slab is easier to move than you'd expect. It machines and finishes well. It is soft for a hardwood: right for tables, benches and wall pieces, not for cutting boards.
Where our Parota comes from
Every log is harvested under a MINAE permit and carries its yellow tag. Our founder, Bernardo Urbina, selects every log. We mill it in Costa Rica, sticker it 12–16 inches apart, pre-dry it for 1.5 months, then kiln-dry it (3 carts × 15 tons, Italian control software). Every slab is sanded to 120 grit.
Sizes and price
Most of our Parota slabs are 3 inches thick and 8 to 11½ feet long. We also stock half slabs around 5 feet and off-cuts under 4 feet for smaller work. Slabs are priced by the board foot: $16.50 for full slabs, $15 for off-cuts. Every listing shows its exact dimensions, board feet and price.
