What is Monkey Pod wood?
Monkey Pod (Samanea saman) is called Cenízaro in Costa Rica and rain tree in other places. Same tree, same wood: if you searched for cenízaro, you're in the right place.
The wood runs from golden to dark brown, with darker streaks, and its interlocked grain catches the light as you walk past a finished table. It is a little denser than Parota and holds up well to insects and decay. Expect some tear-out when planing across interlocked grain; a sharp blade and a light last pass take care of it.
Where our Monkey Pod comes from
Every log is harvested under a MINAE permit and carries its yellow tag. Our founder, Bernardo Urbina, selects every log. We mill it in Costa Rica, sticker it 12–16 inches apart, pre-dry it for 1.5 months, then kiln-dry it (3 carts × 15 tons, Italian control software). Every slab is sanded to 120 grit.
Sizes and price
Most of our Monkey Pod slabs are 3 inches thick and 6½ to 12 feet long. We also stock half slabs around 5 feet and off-cuts under 5 feet for smaller work. Most full slabs are priced at $16.50 per board foot, off-cuts at $15. Every listing shows its exact dimensions, board feet and price.
